Should a fire or flood occur involving priceless books, works of art, antiques, and ephemera
(stamps, comics, magazines etc ) it is then imperative to act quickly.
We will remove damaged and vulnerable items in a precise and methodical manner from the
disaster site using specialised packing materials, crates and transportation, to a controlled, secure
environment to halt any on-going damage or deterioration
Document SOS is the only company of trained Paper Conservators who offer a Conservation Based
Recovery Service which is entirely different to general removal or disaster recovery organisations.
On arrival at our Operations Base a Disaster Assessment will be carried out to evaluate the damage
incurred to items to ensure appropriate stabilising treatment and storage are applied.
A full report is made to include recommendations for disaster recovery measures, conservation
treatments and costs. This can be submitted to insurers / clients for approval. Meanwhile the items
in question will be held in secure stable storage conditions whilst awaiting instructions.
The recovery process is two-fold:
- to apply disaster recovery techniques to reverse the immediate damage to the material i.e.
drying, sewage decontamination, smoke removal glass peppering etc
- conservation treatment to recover the item aesthetically and structurally
Many historic houses and private collectors have disaster plans in place but have no provision for
transport and damage mitigation or restoration.
Document SOS also has a strong alliance partnership with
accredited conservators of other materials such as porcelain and
china, furniture, jewellery, fans, toys, textiles etc..
We can help you compile a disaster recovery plan tailored to your collections and building access - see Disaster Recovery and Restoration
We highly recommend a Simulated Disaster Recovery exercise especially with old buildings that may
have difficult exit points or are in remote locations. Please see Training for more information.
